How It Works

Reading time is estimated by dividing the total word count by your reading speed in words per minute (WPM). The average adult reads at approximately 200–250 WPM for non-technical content. Technical or dense material may slow reading to 150 WPM or below, while skimming can reach 400+ WPM.

Speaking time is calculated at 130 WPM, which is the average pace for clear, well-paced presentations. This helps speakers and presenters estimate how long their content will take to deliver aloud.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the average reading speed?
The average adult reads at about 200–250 words per minute for general content. College-level readers may reach 300+ WPM, while speed readers can exceed 600 WPM with reduced comprehension.
How is speaking time different from reading time?
Speaking is slower than silent reading. A comfortable speaking pace for presentations is about 120–150 WPM. This calculator uses 130 WPM as the default speaking rate.
Does content difficulty affect reading time?
Yes. Technical, scientific, or legal texts are typically read at 100–150 WPM, while light fiction or blog posts can be read at 250–300 WPM. Choose the appropriate speed setting for accurate estimates.
