How GPA Is Calculated
GPA is calculated by dividing total quality points by total credit hours. Quality points for each course equal the grade value (on a 4.0 scale) multiplied by the course's credit hours.
For example: An A (4.0) in a 3-credit course = 12 quality points. A B (3.0) in a 4-credit course = 12 quality points. Total: 24 points ÷ 7 credits = 3.43 GPA.
Frequently Asked Questions
What GPA do I need for honors?
Requirements vary by institution, but common thresholds are: Cum Laude 3.5+, Magna Cum Laude 3.7+, Summa Cum Laude 3.9+. Dean's list typically requires 3.5 or higher per semester.
Does this support weighted GPA?
This calculator uses the standard unweighted 4.0 scale. Some high schools use weighted scales (up to 5.0) for AP/honors courses. Adjust grade values manually if needed.
Can I include my existing cumulative GPA?
This calculator computes GPA from the courses you enter. To factor in previous semesters, include all courses or calculate the weighted average of your old and new GPAs.
