About the U.S. Navy Method
The U.S. Navy body fat formula uses circumference measurements to estimate body fat percentage. For men, it uses waist and neck measurements. For women, waist, hip, and neck are required. While not as precise as DEXA scans or hydrostatic weighing, it provides a reasonable estimate.
Measure your waist at the navel level, neck at the narrowest point below the Adam's apple, and hips at the widest point. Use a flexible tape measure and don't compress the skin.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a healthy body fat percentage?
For men: 14-17% is fit, 18-24% is average. For women: 21-24% is fit, 25-31% is average. Athletes typically have lower percentages. Essential fat minimums are about 3% for men and 12% for women.
How accurate is this method?
The Navy method has a margin of error of about 3-4%. It's most accurate for people with average body proportions. For more precise measurements, consider DEXA scanning or hydrostatic weighing.
